He's back! Penguin Random House Audio producer Nick Martorelli returns to discuss another Star Wars audiobook creation - the novelization of The Last Jedi. And let's start with this: Imagine you received a copy of the novelization BEFORE the movie debuted in theaters. Would you read the book before you saw the movie? Think about your own answer, because that's how the interview kicks off... Punch it!

How the creative team manages to skirt around that thing about how the Rebels first major victory was The Battle of Scarif is just the tip of the iceberg as far as the final episode of Star Wars Rebels is concerned. Part 2 of "Family Reunion - and Farewell" closed some loops, left others tantalizingly open, and showed how much Ezra Bridger has grown over the years. Punch it!

The pieces are all on the board, and the final plan is set in motion. I'm talking about part 1 of "Family Reunion - and Farewell," the series finale of Star Wars Rebels. Not only does Ezra's plan fail, but it plays right into Thrawn's hands. And the parallels between this episode and Return of the Jedi - straightforward and with various inversions - are more than a little remarkable. Punch it!

While borrowing from - and sometimes reversing - scenarios from both Return of the Jedi and J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, Dave Filoni and crew created a memorable send-off for the Ghost team that was uniquely Star Wars Rebels, too. "Family Reunion - and Farewell" are the 15th and 16th episodes of the season, and the final episodes of this series. Punch it!

The title, a line taken from a Gandalf line in The Return of the King, evokes the folly of what the scant rebel contingent on Lothal is trying to pull off. And this is their Minas Tirith moment, with the last citadel of freedom and safety being assaulted by the might of the Empire. It's "A Fool's Hope," episode 14 from season 4 of Star Wars Rebels. And in this briefing, I'll freely admit that they had me fooled about former Lothal governor-turned-rebel Ryder Azadi. Punch it!

The spoilers are already out there, but they're not in here. On today's episode, I'm taking one last look at the footage we already have - from the midseason trailer, the teaser at the end of the last episode of Rebels Recon, and the "Let's Do This" sizzle video that debuted on the Star Wars YouTube channel a few days ago. Just by looking at those three pieces, it's pretty clear how the events of the series finale can be broken up into thirds themselves, one part each per episode for these last three experiences with the Ghost crew as we know them now. Punch it!

With four nominations and zero wins, The Last Jedi was shut out of the Oscar celebration on Sunday night. And this would be the seventh Star Wars production in a row from Lucasfilm to be shut out from the annual awards - a streak now spanning 37 years. Since the last winner was Best Sound Mixing for The Empire Strikes Back, it makes a person wonder: How much might this have to do with Hollywood holding a grudge against Lucasfilm and George Lucas over the opening crawl that caused Lucas to pay a $25,000 fine and quit the Director's Guild? Punch it!

This may be the longest interview I've ever done! On today's podcast, I'm sharing a snippet of an interview from the Star-B-Q Podcast, on one of their "Nibblers" episodes. Ironic, in a sense, since the full interview goes for two hours! For the snippet you'll hear here, I'm talking with their co-host Fode (yes, as in podrace announcers Fode and Beed) about Force users and non-users, and how the notion of being in a "flow state" is similar to what non-Force-users might be experiencing in the Star Wars universe. Punch it!

Could Ahsoka Tano make an appearance in Star Wars Rebels during the series finale on Monday, March 5? I'm looking back at the 10-card Topps series from the Star Wars Card Trader app released in 2016, and discussed by Dave Filoni at Star Wars Celebration Europe. Ahsoka's fate after her showdown with Darth Vader in "Twilight of the Apprentice" was mysteriously hinted at in those cards. And after last week's "A World Between Worlds" episode of Rebels, we may now know more about her post-Vader-fight time than ever before. Punch it!

Del Rey's latest timeline tells us nothing new about Solo: A Star Wars Story (even though a bunch of folks seem to think it does). We've learned more, in fact, from the news about the Solo publishing initiative courtesy of Lucasfilm's Michael Siglain, and from a brief excerpt of the upcoming Han and Lando novel. Also, Episode IX's script is finished, and could Leia be re-cast for IX? Punch it?

The Star Wars Rebels episode "A World Between Worlds" re-introduced the concept of time travel back into the Star Wars canon. Based on how the episode turned out, it might not feature as a plot element again any time soon. And that would be in alignment with how time travel was treated in the old Expanded Universe as well - it was an exceedingly rare thing, usually caused by some freak hyperspace travel issue or something unusual with the Force. On today's podcast, I'll also be talking about some of the characters who've previously been exposed to time travel situations in Star Wars. Punch it!

The fate of Ahsoka Tano is revealed - to a degree - in "A World Between Worlds," episode 13 from season 4 of Star Wars Rebels. in the process, we also learn that we've seen this world between worlds before, and in a huge leap for the Star Wars canon, an element that was pretty rare to begin with in the old Expanded Universe has been reintroduced: time travel. In an episode that owes a debt to Raiders of the Lost Ark, "Wolves and a Door" gives us the first real idea of what's so special about the Jedi Temple on Lothal. "It's a conduit between the living and the dead," Palpatine says, which makes for some bold foreshadowing - especially when coupled with the visions and voices the remaining Ghost crew members hear on their journey with the loth-wolves to the temple, as well as one very obvious (and another not-so obvious) reference to Ahsoka Tano, too. Punch it!

Once again, the creative team behind Star Wars Rebels is playing it close to the vest. Despite two clips shown for the upcoming episodes "Wolves and a Door" and "A World Between Worlds," the clips are only from one of them ("Wolves"), and they only show the moments before the big action of the episodes. That makes them very similar to the "Jedi Night"/"DUME" clips we got. But because we've already gotten two of the seven episodes in this final half of the final season, we can look back at the mid-season trailer to see what else we already know. Plus, what is the big "revelation" they're hinting at? Punch it!

I've been thinking a lot about how Rian Johnson revealed that the Force power Luke Skywalker used to project his image across the galaxy came from the (now-Legends) reference book "The Jedi Path." Some people were upset about this new power, and got really worked up over it. But it occurred to me that it should have been accepted much more easily. After all, every single Star Wars Saga movie has introduced at least one new Force power. Punch it!

The log line for "Jedi Night" tells us Hera will be rescued. Nothing new there - we saw as much in the mid-season trailer for Star Wars Rebels. But the log line for "DUME" mentions a "devastating loss." Of course, that's more fuel for the "Kanan Dies" fire. But based on what we saw in the mid-season trailer, there's another very logical explanation that could also explain how the Ghost crew needs to find a "new purpose and resolve." Punch it!

Yoda's infamous line from Return of the Jedi has something to do with this notion. But basing the theories of Kanan's death during Rebels means you have to make a couple of assumptions that I don't think are safe to make. One of them has to do with whether Kanan actually remains a Jedi, and the other has to do with how long it will be in-universe between the end of Star Wars Rebels and Yoda's proclamation. Plus, we'll explore a couple of (potentially unintentional) information drops that may bear on this whole question. Punch it!

Back in March 2017, Bob Iger said four very crucial things about Solo: A Star Wars Story. This was back before they had even announced the name of the movie! Iger revealed the timeline of the movie; the fact that he'd be "acquiring a certain vehicle and meeting a certain Wookiee"; and that we'd learn how "he got his name." Well, now, with all the footage and the Entertainment Weekly features, we can start fleshing out the details of Iger's points. Punch it!

Yes, I did a podcast earlier this year about how we're missing romance as a crucial element of the sequel movies. That's not to say there aren't love-like relationships happening in there - or in the other movies as well. Today, I'm looking at what I'd consider to be the most important love relationship in each movie. And again, that could also be brotherly love, comrade-in-arms love, familial love, or something else entirely, at least in one case. Punch it!

Two planets in Solo: A Star Wars Story have been confirmed outright: Corellia (Han's homeworld), and Mimban, the swamp planet you may remember from the earliest days of the Expanded Universe. A third one has been strongly hinted at: Kessel, of the infamous spice mines. Now, thanks to the commercial and the teaser for Solo - and one other source we've talked about before - we now have information that puts the planet total anywhere between four and six (with more potentially to come). He didn't utter a line of dialogue, and appeared in only five shots in the commercial and the teaser for Solo: A Star Wars Story. What is it about Donald Glover's performance as Lando Calrissian that they're trying to hide form us??? Just kidding, of course. It is kind of funny that no one complained about that, though ... but then again, Lucasfilm may have followed the "less is more" strategy that dates all the way back to Boba Fett and Aurra Sing. And when you think about it, there were a couple of signature Lando elements in even those brief snippets. Punch it!

Well, we've had our first extended experience of Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo, and what can we glean from it? For one thing, he's not the Han Solo we meet in the cantina on Tatooine because he hasn't become that person yet. So what we're hearing in the commercial and the teaser for Solo: A Star Wars Story is the forming of that scoundrel. And in the process, we're getting a look at the depths of the character - and possibly a deeper character than we expected him to be. Punch it!

Paige and Rose Tico are new additions to the Star Wars universe, but we learn precious little about them in the movie. Paige, if I recall correctly, doesn't even have a line of dialogue! Rose tells us they escaped from the First Order devastating their home world, and she's never a fathier in real life. But in Star Wars: The Last Jedi: Cobalt Squadron, we learn where they're from, how they escaped, and much more. Punch it!

In the days leading up to The Last Jedi, Cobalt and Crimson Squadrons - those would be the squadrons of Resistance bombers - we're on a secret mission in First Order territory, risking the provocation of open warfare first to spy on the First Order's activities in the Atterra system, and then to supply Atterrans attempting to fight back against the First Order occupation and blockade. That's the gist of Cobalt Squadron, the new junior novel by Elizabeth Wren that tells us what Rose and Paige Tico were up to prior to their onscreen appearances. Punch it!

With The Last Jedi on 700 fewer screens this weekend (under 1800 in total), and with weekend box office numbers projected at about $4 million, we're reaching the point where we can just about finalize The Last Jedi's performance in comparison to the top movies all time, domestic and global. I'm running down those rankings here, and revisiting (one last time) the reasons for why The Last Jedi performed the way it did at the box office (and which was pretty darn good overall). Punch it!

"From a Certain Point of View" is just the beginning. I'm talking with Nick Martorelli today - he's a producer with Penguin Random House Audio who's responsible for casting and overseeing production of the Star Wars programs. And yes, we'll talk about Jon Hamm and how he became part of the project. You also learn about how they chose the narrators for the different stories, and much more. We'll also be digressing for a bit (well, perhaps more than a bit) to talk about the NPR Star Wars radio dramas, too. Punch it!

It's one thing to merely read Shakespeare, and it's another thing entirely to see it performed. By the same token, it's one thing to merely read The Force Doth Awaken, the Shakespearean-style adaptation of The Force Awakens by Ian Doescher. But it's another entirely to bring it to life in an audiobook performance. On today's podcast, I'm interviewing Aaron Blank, co-executive producer for The Force Doth Awaken audiobook, and you and I will learn together what it takes to add a whole new dimension to a story in the Star Wars saga. After reading the lovable "Chewie and the Porgs" children's book, I've arrived at a rather inescapable conclusion: That our sweet Chewbacca is, in fact, a diabolical scoundrel. Because the book has to live in the same universe as the movie and The Last Jedi Visual Dictionary, the kindness with which Chewie treats the Porgs is akin to how people talk about keeping the stress levels of chickens as low as possible, because they allegedly taste better that way. First, you need to know how the First Order reacts to disloyalty. (Hint: they're somewhat poor sports about it.) Then, you need to know just how wide a variety of duties and assignments are given to some stormtroopers. At that point, you can get a sense of how huge a deal Finn's desertion and betrayal of the First Order was, why they wanted to keep the lid on it, and how badly Captain Phasma wanted to see Finn dead. We know for a fact that Pablo Hidalgo has hidden clues about future movies in plain sight before - just look at the mention of Crait in the Rogue One Ultimate Visual Guide for proof. What might he be hiding in The Last Jedi Visual Dictionary about Solo: A Star Wars Story and Episode IX? Well, maybe Episode IX is a stretch because we don't know how much, if anything, of the work Colin Trevorrow did is being used by J.J. Abrams and Chris Terrio. (Probably not much, if anything.) But Solo: A Star Wars Story is much more of a known quantity to the Story Group... Punch it!

Star Wars fans love to talk about shipping in the new movies. Rey and Finn. Finn and Poe. Poe and Rey. Rey and Kylo Ren. Heck, people are even shipping Kylo Ren and General Hux now! Why do we care so much about shipping characters? Because we desperately want to see romance re-introduced as an element of Star Wars movies. The return of Ian McDiarmid as Emperor Palpatine has to be one of the biggest surprises about the finale trailer for Star Wars Rebels. But the trailer is almost as intriguing for what *isn't* there as for what is. Naturally, this opens the door to questions about the survival of all the characters through the end of the series. And there are more surprises, too - including the return of a certain-colored convor, the appearance of the "Ones," the ultra-powerful Force-wielders from the Mortis story arc of the Clone Wars, and Kanan giving himself a haircut Hera very much dislikes. Punch it!

We haven't been given the full picture of Luke's post-Return of the Jedi history yet, but we've been given some tantalizing clues thanks to The Last Jedi Visual Dictionary. In fact, we may be able to safely break that thirty-year time period into thirds based on what we now know about his activities. Whether that's an even three groups of ten years is still a mystery, but the book does potentially suggest that Luke and Ben may have parted ways years before Leia was aware of the schism. Punch it!

And now that it's been out for a while, so spoilers *shouldn't* be an issue, I thought it'd be a good time to finish the story and close the book on Iden, Del, their daughter Zay, and the man who wants them to destroy them all - their old squadmate, Gideon Hask, now an officer in the First Order. There are basically four kinds of stories in The Last Jedi Incredible Cross-Sections book: Business stories that give you a glimpse of the work of an industry; thumbnail stories provided in their entirety; hints at brand new events never detailed previously in the canon; and the re-introduction of elements from "Legends" (aka the old Expanded Universe). For the latter, one of the inclusions harkens back to the beloved Han Solo and the Lost Legacy. Punch it!

One of the (many) neat things about the Incredible Cross-Sections books from DK Publishing is the miniature stories you find included side by side with the descriptions of the vehicles being profiled in the book. You know the Resistance bomber sequence in The Last Jedi, of course. Well, it left a lot of moviegoers (or, perhaps, a few very vocal moviegoers) scratching their heads. How did they get the bombs to drop in zero-G space? Why did they stay so close together that they could all be taken down by a chain reaction? And where were they for The Force Awakens, anyway? Well, these questions are all very convincingly answered in DK Publishing's Incredible Cross-Sections book for The Last Jedi. Punch it!

Finn told us that the siege cannon deployed by the First Order on Crait was "Death Star tech." Well, what kind of Death Star tech would power a giant laser cannon? If you guessed kyber crystals, you'd be right as rain. But here's the scary thing - that's not the only weapon in the First Order's arsenal powered by kyber crystals. And for all we know, Supreme Leader Snoke's ship could have had tons of them on board as cargo. Punch it!

Back when Captain Needa said, "No ship that small has a cloaking device!" about the Millennium Falcon, that's about all we knew about stealth tech in the Star Wars galaxy. Thirty years later, it seems the galaxy hasn't advanced very far in that field. On today's podcast, we're talking about what we've learned about stealth tech as a result of the events of The Last Jedi, with help from DK Publishing's new Incredible Cross-Sections book. Punch it!

Donald Glover on the reshoots, Ron Howard's silence on social media, the breaking of a three-movie box office streak, and the biggest question of all - when will we see the first trailer??? All that and more about Solo: A Star Wars Story on today's podcast, as well as some news that had been reported as being about Rian Johnson's new trilogy, but it has to be about Episode IX in reality. Punch it!

Thanks very much to Justin Bolger, Social Media Strategist at Lucasfilm, for helping me look at the decisions made - especially by Poe Dameron - in a new and more charitable light. If you remove the value judgments, there are no "good" or "bad" decisions. There's just "human" decisions, as Justin put it. Today, I'm taking a look at how those all-too-human decisions nearly caused the death of the Resistance. Punch it!

Console games, mobile games, and virtual reality - for a while there, we thought that we were going to get a lot more storytelling out of the new releases. That we were going to learn more about that galaxy far, far away with every new release. Well, it seems that won't exactly be the case, based on 2017 and what little there is to be known about 2018 so far. Battlefront II and location-based VR experiences may be our best bet for digital storytelling in the Star Wars universe. Punch it!

Marvel's only revealed their plans for the first three months of 2018 so far. But based on what they've done over the past couple of years, we can make some pretty safe educated guesses about what they might have up their sleeves that they're not telling us yet. Punch it!

We know some of what's coming in 2018, we can guess at a few more, and even with all that there's still a huge gap in what's been announced. I'm going over all the details about the novels from Del Rey and Disney, the reference books from DK Publishing, and unique items from some smaller publishing houses as well. Punch it!

The Last Jedi finishes its run. Solo: A Star Wars Story debuts. Episode IX begins and likely finishes principal photography. Rian Johnson's trilogy development gets underway. And maybe we get an announcement about a previously rumored Obi-Wan Kenobi movie, too? It's going to be a busy year for Star Wars movies... Punch it!
